The US-based drugmaker is buying India’s largest drugmaker Pfizer Inc. to sell the drug it acquired last week in a deal valued at roughly a year’s price.
The acquisition, which will be called the “Viagra-China deal,” will allow Pfizer to sell the Viagra-China drug in the US for a total of $1.5 billion, and it will also deal with China’s key drugmaker for a market worth $4.6 billion. Pfizer has no plans to sell the drug in the Asia-Pacific markets.
Pfizer also plans to buy the Chinese pharmaceutical company Hetero Pharmaceuticals Limited, which manufactures the Chinese version of Pfizer’s Viagra, for a total of $1.8 billion, according to a statement. This will allow Pfizer to sell the drug in China for about $4 to $5 per pill, or about $0.5 to $0.8 per pill, compared to about $0.5 to $0.4 per pill in the US for Viagra.
Pfizer’s deal will be called the “Viagra-China deal” because the two companies will be selling drugs in the US from April 2021 to November 2022, and the latter will be the first in the world to use the two companies’ drug offerings to promote their new products.
